Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. When she was a young girl Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to the word association. Ford began to be interested in acting at the age of teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time, Ford decided that this was not the best location for her. Ford decided to apply instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured a position on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. She already made a TV appearance in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Apart from her regular stage work, Tate was a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
